It is quite difficult to find out about the town's history because the municipal archive was burnt in 1903. The place of Guiamets is already mentioned in some documents from the 13th-14th centuries.
The construction of the reservoir was very important for the village. It took 20 years to build, from 1951 to 1971. During that period the town experienced a population growth.

June 24: Sant Joan's Day. Bonfire, fireworks and night ball with 'coca' and 'sangria'. First two weeks in July: Cultural Week. Town Festival: Between 20th-25th in August. During these days there are several musical events such as concerts, typical dances and balls. December 28: Sants Innocents Day. Popular breakfast and night ball.

The parish church of Sant Lluís was built in 1971, when the bishop of Tortosa, before the bad conditions of the old church, gave permission to build a new temple.
