History

In the place known as 'Tosseta de Guiamets' there were found more than one hundred silex pieces from the Palaeolithic period. These pieces are considered by many experts as the most important remains of this kind in Catalunya.

It is quite difficult to find out about the town's history because the municipal archive was burnt in 1903. The place of Guiamets is already mentioned in some documents from the 13th-14th centuries.

It is also known that around the 18th-19th centuries Els Guiamets belonged to the municipality of Tivissa. The village obtained its vicarage in 1784 and its parish church in 1878. There is no certainty about the year of segregation from Tivissa. It is said that the town's mayor arrayed a mule with beautiful attires and rode to Madrid to get the segregation order.

The construction of the reservoir was very important for the village. It took 20 years to build, from 1951 to 1971. During that period the town experienced a population growth.

Remarkable places

The parish church of Sant Lluís was built in 1971, when the bishop of Tortosa, before the bad conditions of the old church, gave permission to build a new temple.

The co-operative cellar was founded in 1917 and also 'Rosa la guapa' a private cellar of old family tradition that dates from the last century.

Tourists should not miss the reservoir and its surroundings.
